What You Can Do to Improve the Quality of Your Homework
If you are overwhelmed with homework, there are a few things you can do to lessen your homework load. These tactics also help to improve the quality of your homework, ensuring you learn concepts better and enjoy higher grades than before.
- First, you want to ensure you understood the assignment. Write down each task in your day planner or your notebook. This will help prevent any mishaps or forgetfulness. Do not hesitate to ask questions of your teacher, especially if you are unsure what is expected of you. You will find that it is much simpler to take one extra minute to ask your teacher what exactly they require, either in class or immediately after, rather than struggle to try and figure it out later that night. If you prefer, you can ask your teacher about how long they think that homework assignment should take, that way you can prepare yourself for the amount of time you should set aside, and will know if it is taking far too long.
- Use any of your extra time to your advantage. If you have a lot of homework, try and find small hours in the day to break and do homework. Study during breaks, in between classes, or during study hall. Do not waste this precious time hanging out with friends, when you could instead use your unstructured time to get more of your homework done at school.
- Make sure to pace yourself. If you cannot finish your homework during school, consider how much you have left and what other things you have going on that evening, and budget the time you have. Many students have between one and three hours of homework per night, and if you were given homework from all of your other teachers too, then you may need to set aside more time that night to dedicate to your work. If you have a part time job or participate in sports, you may need to create a working schedule that involves those items.
- Make sure that you set reasonable goals that you can accomplish each night. The more goals you reach, the better you will feel about your homework. And when you reach your goals, make sure that you reward yourself for small accomplishments. Nothing will build up your self confidence like reaching goals and receiving rewards.
